Melting diamond could unlock triple fusion gain and the secrets of ice-giant planets
Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory measured the melting behavior of diamond under extreme pressures higher than the centers of Uranus and Neptune. Using laser-driven shock compression and X-ray diffraction, the team confirmed that diamond melts directly into a dense metallic liquid without passing through intermediate crystal phases. These precise measurements resolve a long-standing discrepancy between previous experiments and quantum mechanical simulations. In inertial confinement fusion, this discovery allows scientists to use slower initial laser shocks to melt the diamond fuel capsule, which improves fuel compressibility and can potentially triple the energy gain. Additionally, the accurate melting data provides a clearer basis to model carbon behavior and internal structures inside ice-giant planets.

Alloy Robotics Secures $8M to Help Engineers Debug Robot Fleets with AI
Alloy Robotics, which builds AI agents that analyze robot data to identify the root causes of failures, has raised $8 million at an $80 million valuation, just over a year after its founding. Square Peg led the round, with pre-seed backers Blackbird, Airtree and Skip Capital returning. The round also included leaders and engineers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Tesla, Waymo, Halter and Carbon Robotics, along with several of Alloy’s customers. The funding will support engineering hiring, U.S. expansion, and further development of Alloy’s models and agent platform.
Alloy brings together a fleet’s logs, telemetry, video, and sensor data with engineering context from Slack, Jira, and other systems that teams already use. Its agents continuously scan for anomalies, regressions, and recurring patterns, allowing engineers to investigate known problems in natural language while surfacing issues they might otherwise miss. Each finding links back to the underlying missions, timestamps, and signals so engineers can inspect the evidence themselves.
