U.S. ports reopened after ILA port workers agreed to return to work, ending a three-day strike that threatened to disrupt the American economy. The breakthrough on Thursday came after port employers offered a 62% increase in wages over six years.
While the ILA workers are back to work, the US aerospace workers part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) missed their first paychecks and earlier in the week, and healthcare benefits ran out.

GE Appliances Uses Advanced Automation to Dish Out Productivity

That’s why GE Appliances’ dishwasher factory is the recipient of the 2024 Assembly Plant of the Year award sponsored by ASSEMBLY Magazine. The assembly plants have received significant upgrades over the past two years with new top-load washer models and four-door refrigerators added, as well as new production lines and fabrication equipment. The dishwasher expansion alone positions AP3 to become the largest plant of its kind in the United States. Over the past six years, GE Appliances has significantly increased volume at the dishwasher factory.
“The transformation was driven by two major new product introductions,” notes Good, who previously served as plant manager at GE Appliances’ refrigerator factory in Decatur, AL. “For both programs, the AP3 manufacturing team (operations, quality, advanced manufacturing engineering, advanced quality and materials) integrated closely with our technology team.
“They reduced total part count, developed common parts used for multiple brands and platforms, reduced complexity and improved ergonomics for our operators, and installed best-in-class assembly lines and automation,” notes Good.

PepsiCo installs its first automated warehouse in Poland with Mecalux
🔖 Topics: Warehouse Automation
🏢 Organizations: PepsiCo, Mecalux
The facility was designed in line with the push system, which involves manufacturing in advance to meet anticipated demand. While this method reduces unit costs, it requires sufficient space to manage large production runs. With 9,000 locations, PepsiCo’s new finished goods warehouse receives a large number of pallets daily, loaded with ready-to-ship bags of potato crisps for clients. “The production process is fully integrated with the automated warehouse. Each potato crisp bag is transported from the manufacturing area to final packaging, ready to be picked and loaded onto the lorry,” says Pietrusa.
Transporting goods internally between storage and production is now faster thanks to electric monorail and conveyor systems for pallets. These solutions also connect the warehouse with the docking area, facilitating the shipment of thousands of pallets a day. The electric monorail deposits pallets ordered by clients into five double-channel live roller conveyor lines. Each channel has a 34-pallet capacity. SKUs are grouped according to delivery route, vehicle type, client and shipping priority, among other factors.

Autonomous Truck Company Torc Robotics Aims to Scale
✍️ Author: Steve Banker
🔖 Topics: Autonomous Vehicle
🏢 Organizations: Torc Robotics
Autonomous trucks also need an incredible amount of computing power, and that needs to be affordable. And there have been dramatic breakthroughs with AI algorithms used for navigation and safety. The CEO says, “You have the building blocks” to release a product at the right price point, which is safe enough to reduce liability risks greatly. “That just wasn’t the case five years ago.”
However, Mr. Schmidt’s larger point was that getting a handful of AV trucks on the road was not good enough. The real question was how soon you could release autonomous trucks at scale. The 2027 date Torc is shooting for is a date they can believe they can also put trucks on the road at scale. To do this, the trucks don’t just have to be safe and reliable; they must be cost-efficient and easy to buy and service at dealerships. Daimler Truck will provide the intellectual capital to do high-volume manufacturing and has a dealer network in place.

Machine learning-based dispatching for a wet clean station in semiconductor manufacturing
✍️ Authors: Jun-Hee Han, Sung-hoon Jeong, Gyusun Hwang
🔖 Topics: Production Planning
🏭 Vertical: Semiconductor
🏢 Organizations: Pusan National University
The concept of cyber manufacturing has become a critical element in semiconductor fabrication environments, where automation and systemization are integral, for addressing the growing complexity of processes and facilitating predictive capabilities through data integration. This study deals with the dispatching problem to minimize makespan at a wet clean station in semiconductor fabrication using artificial intelligence-enabled manufacturing control techniques. The only available data are historical logs that record when each lot enters and leaves the station. However, even when cleaning the same product type, the duration that lots spend in the station may vary based on the combination of product types being cleaned simultaneously and the settings of the station. Thus, using the time records, this study proposes a dispatching method based on machine learning models (multiple linear regression, deep neural network, and convolutional neural network). The proposed algorithms were evaluated and verified by comparing them with CPLEX solving a mixed integer programming and dispatching methods used in a semiconductor fab in Korea.

Carbon film with crazy electron spin life could boost quantum devices production
✍️ Author: Rupendra Brahambhatt
🏢 Organizations: Archer Materials, EPFL
Australia-based semiconductor company Archer Materials has developed an advanced carbon film that can boost the production of quantum materials. The electron spin of these films lasts for 400 nanoseconds — far longer than the lifetimes previously observed in carbon nano-onions (CNOs).
The researchers from Archer Materials suggest that their newly developed carbon films can make CNO production scalable. Plus, it can be used alongside CNOs to speed up quantum material manufacturing. The researchers developed a proprietary chemical vapor deposition process, which enabled them to deposit the carbon film on substrates such as silicon without any difficulties.
